Captain Phillips Rescued!

I've been taking jabs at the President for several days now, and it's time for me to back peddle a bit and give him credit for giving an order that allowed Navy Seal Sharpshooters take out three of the pirates.

I've heard two differant reports about how this went down. One said that while three of the pirates were off to another part of the boat to take a leak; Seal snipers shot the three pirates and the fourth one immediatly surrendered.

The other version of the story is that one of the pirates had been injured during the initial takeover and needed medical attention. So, the life boat only had three pirates on it plus Captain Phillips, and when the opportunity presented itself, the snipers took out the pirates.

We'll get the straight story over the next few days I'm sure.

Part of me still wishes that this had been settled days ago and honestly, there really didn't seem to be any other option, but I need to give credit where credit is due; President Obama did the right thing.

Congratulations President Obama. Outstanding work Navy Seals!Welcome home Captain Phillips. And, good riddance to the scum bag pirates.

April 11 - 9:34 PM - Update

Well, it's been four days now and the White House says that aides have met with the Prez two times today to talk about the pirate siutation.

Aides also said they are talking to the Department of Defense about it too.

Well, I'm sure that is making those pirates sweat now?

April 11th - 8:30 AM Update

Well, the plot thickens.

Obama still hasn't weighed in on the pirate situation; so I guess that part of the plot is still kind of watery.

Rueters News in U.K. is pissed off because only now that Americans have been pirated has it become global news. It's hard to tel from their story if they are angry at the US, the pirates, the news, or everyone else.

The pirates have demanded 2 MILL-ion dollars for the return of Captain Phillips. Some of their comrade were on their way to presumably rescue the four stranded pirates and generally make the standoff more difficult. They are are saying that the pirated pirate ship couldn't find the lifeboat with a Naval destroyer next to it, so they retuned to port. Returned to port? The pirates have a pirate port?

The impression I had of the lifeboat was apparently incorrect. When they said lifeboat, I imagined a big row boat kind of thing. Well, they showed a picture of the type of lifeboat involved. It sort of looks like a small fiberglass submarine. So, I guess that explains wht sharpshooters haven't picked off the pirates.

While Obama hasn't said a word publically about the pirate thing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said,

"We are looking for ways to increase the effectiveness of what we are doing, including the recruitment of additional partners to be part of the surveillance work that is done. But we also understand that the instability in Somalia is a contributing factor to those who take to the seas in order to board ships, hijack them, intimidate and threaten their crews, and then seek ransom,"

Well, at least someone in government has recognized that doing nothing is pretty ineffective when dealing with pirates. I must say though, it's kind of disappointing to learn that Hillary is looking for help to nothing. Damn it!, the US government is the best at doing nothing!

April 10, 2009 - Update

We're STILL waiting to hear something, anything from the Prez on this incident.

Captain Phillips tried to escape the lifeboat earlier. He jumped out of the boat! Presumably, he gave Naval sharpshooters a clear shot at the pirates, but there were none. The pirates instead recaptured Captain Phillips and brought him back into the lifeboat.

Now, this is just speculation, but is it possible that the Navy had instructions to not harm the pirates? So, even when they had a chance to take them out, a chance given to them through the desperate courage of Captain Phillips, did the Navy have orders to ignore the opportunity? What do you think?

Update -

Well, now the cargo ship has left the scene of the hijacking and is on their way to Kenya where they will deliver much needed supplies and humanitarian goods for Muslims there. The cargo ship now has some armed guards aboard - (I've got to wonder why armed guards aren't allowed on these ships anyway!)

The Muslim terrorists still have Captain Phillips in the lifeboat, still floating dead in the water.

Obama is busy wrapping up those housing comments I guess before he gets around to addressing the piracy at sea issue.

To be fair to the President, I'm sure he is waiting to make public comment on the piracy incident to determine whether he is going to try to take credit for success or blame someone else for failure.

April 9th - 12:03 PM - Update

A Navy destroyer arrived on the scene at some point over night. The four pirates still have Captain Phillips held hostage in a life boat near the cargo ship presumably. The life boat is out of gas.

Those pirates have some gnads I'll give 'em that. It is clearly a no win situation for them; but then again, we still haven't heard from the Prez. In fact at a news conference earlier today when the Prez was asked about the pirate situation Prez responded that he was there to talk about housing.

It seems crystal clear to me that Obama has a top secret plan to screw this thing up royally.

Maybe he'll give the cargo ship back to the pirates! After all, they had stolen it fair and square before the crew took it back. Nawh, even Barry isn't weak enough to do that.

Maybe he'll give the terrorists a can of gas for their lifeboat in exchange for the captain. Now, that I could see him doing.

My solution is to have the Seals do what they do best. Swim beneath the lifeboat undetected. Then guided by comrades on the surface telling them where to shoot from beneath the boat; start blasting. The captain migh be scared out of his mind for a second or two, but it would be over.

Or, since the life boat is short on supplies, send them some water laced with sleeping pills. When their all snoring, get the captain out and safely back on board his ship. Then, leave the douchebag pirates to figure out if they want to die of starvation, thirst, drowning or their own bullets. See? I'm humane, they have choices!

Let's see what President Obama's lofty thoughts and monitoring comes up with.

April 8, 2009 - 2:13PM Update

Nothing from Obama's office on this as yet, but we've been assured that he has his best people on it.

Meanwhile, they're now reporting that it's true that the crew has regained control of the ship, but apparently the captain of the ship is being held hostage.

That just shows you how stupid today's pirates are. The sailors don't have anything to barter with for the captain's life - they're sailors!

And Obama? Oh come on! Obama HATES bosses! That changes everything! Maybe we'll hear from the Whitehouse on this tomorrow?

April 8, 2009 - 12:15 PM Update:

While Obama is studying his options, it looks like the American sailors on board have retaken the ship!

Could it be? Good old fashioned American self reliance has won the day?

Let's hope our brave boys haven't embarassed the Prez by winning the conflict right in the middle of the presidents surrender or offer to negotiate with the terrorists, oops I mean distraught seamen.

Now I suppose we'll have to make sure that our sailors wern't too rough on the intruders. Yeah, we'll probably have to litigate this thing; it's only fair that some crooked lawyer makes some money if the pirates couldn't. While were at it, Obama should probably apologize to the home country of the pirates for ... I don't know, sailing such tempting cargo so close to pirate ships or something.

If our boys really did take the ship back, I doubt that the main stream will be reporting any further on this story. I'll keep my ears open for further news though.
